Leslie Haines awarded Donald G. Hileman "Educator of the Year" Award at District 7 Conference

Leslie Haines, Academic Director of Graphic Design for Art Institute of Tennessee-Nashville, was awarded the Donald G. Hileman Award by the 7th District of the American Advertising Federation.

The award, which was established by the District's Board of Directors in 1985, recognizes a college educator for outstanding service to advertising, the 7th District, his/her local club or federation, and college advertising students through his/her volunteer effort to the student advertising team, a student advertising club and teaching of superior quality. The first Donald G. Hileman Award was presented posthumously to Dr. Donald G. Hileman, Dean of the College of Communications at the University of Tennessee. Since that time, the recipients have been nominated by local clubs/federations and selected by the Educator Awards Committee.

Haines worked professionally in graphic design since graduating from Buffalo State College in Buffalo, NY in 1983. She stayed in up-state New York working as a designer in a variety of businesses until she earned her MA in Advertising Design from Syracuse University. It was at Syracuse that she first had a chance to teach rising college students the fundamentals of design principles and conceptualization skills.

Haines moved to Nashville in 1995, and in 2001 was hired by Watkins College of Art & Design to build a new BFA in Graphic Design program. In this new role she became responsible for hiring the faculty, developing the curriculum, and equipping the classrooms in order to create a first-class graphic design program.

Haines worked tirelessly to promote the Watkins program and to promote her students to the local advertising and design community in Nashville. She developed relationships with local professionals, agencies, and the Nashville Advertising Federation. Leslie instituted internship programs and job placement opportunities, and kept active in matching graduates with graphic design positions all over the region. The program grew from five to 95 students in five years and garnered 134 ADDY awards, including national awards, by 2006.

In 2007, the Art Institute of Tennessee-Nashville began courting Leslie to launch the Graphic Design program at their new Nashville campus. With the Watkins program well established and highly respected, Leslie sought this opportunity with Art Institute to create another new successful program with a reputable art school. She began her role in September of 2007, and persuaded students to enter work for the very first time into the Nashville ADDY student competition. The fledgling Art Institute students managed to compete with the more established schools in Nashville, including many of Leslie's previous students from Watkins College! The Ai students managed to win two Gold and two Silver ADDY awards out of a total of 43 awards given for the year of 2007.

Leslie Haines' nomination was voted upon unanimously by the Awards Committee, making her the 21st recipient of the award. She received her award on Saturday, April 26, at the 7th District's Spring Convention which was held in Chattanooga, Tennessee, this year. A list of past recipients is available at the 7th District's web site at http://www.7thaaf.com/common/content.asp?PAGE=345.
