2007 Donald G. Hileman Award goes to Leslie Haines
Leslie Haines, Academic Director of Graphic Design for Art Institute of Tennessee-Nashville, was awarded the Donald G. Hileman Award by the 7th District of the American Advertising Federation.
The award, which was established by the District's Board of Directors in 1985, recognizes a college educator for outstanding service to advertising, the 7th District, his/her local club or federation, and college advertising students through his/her volunteer effort to the student advertising team, a student advertising club and teaching of superior quality. The first Donald G. Hileman Award was presented posthumously to Dr. Donald G. Hileman, Dean of the College of Communications at the University of Tennessee. Since that time, the recipients have been nominated by local clubs/federations and selected by the Educator Awards Committee.
Haines worked professionally in graphic design since graduating from Buffalo State College in Buffalo, NY in 1983. She stayed in up-state New York working as a designer in a variety of businesses until she earned her MA in Advertising Design from Syracuse University. It was at Syracuse that she first had a chance to teach rising college students the fundamentals of design principles and conceptualization skills.
Haines moved to Nashville in 1995, and in 2001 was hired by Watkins College of Art & Design to build a new BFA in Graphic Design program. In this new role she became responsible for hiring the faculty, developing the curriculum, and equipping the classrooms in order to create a first-class graphic design program.
Haines worked tirelessly to promote the Watkins program and to promote her students to the local advertising and design community in Nashville. She developed relationships with local professionals, agencies, and the Nashville Advertising Federation. Leslie instituted internship programs and job placement opportunities, and kept active in matching graduates with graphic design positions all over the region. The program grew from five to 95 students in five years and garnered 134 ADDY awards, including national awards, by 2006.
In 2007, the Art Institute of Tennessee-Nashville began courting Leslie to launch the Graphic Design program at their new Nashville campus. With the Watkins program well established and highly respected, Leslie sought this opportunity with Art Institute to create another new successful program with a reputable art school. She began her role in September of 2007, and persuaded students to enter work for the very first time into the Nashville ADDY student competition. The fledgling Art Institute students managed to compete with the more established schools in Nashville, including many of Leslie's previous students from Watkins College! The Ai students managed to win two Gold and two Silver ADDY awards out of a total of 43 awards given for the year of 2007.
Leslie Haines' nomination was voted upon unanimously by the Awards Committee, making her the 21st recipient of the award. She received her award on Saturday, April 26, at the 7th District's Spring Convention which was held in Chattanooga, Tennessee, this year. A list of past recipients is available at the 7th District's web site at http://www.7thaaf.com/common/content.asp?PAGE=345.

Nashville Humane Association ad campaign
WATCH AND LISTEN for the new 2008 Nashville Humane Association’s ad campaign. NAF is helping the Nashville Humane Association with a creative and media placement campaign to promote pet adoption. It kicked off January 24th and will continue through April 30.
NAF is again working with NHA to continue this effort that began so successfully last year. Last year’s campaign, which resulted in an increase of 18% in pets adopted to good homes, has been entered into our local ADDY competition.
Many thanks to everyone who has donated creative, planning, media and more to make this campaign possible. A special thanks to Tim Templeton for the new versions of the creative that was designed last year.
If you want and / or need a pet – the Nashville Humane Association will have exactly the right one. Remember “ You get so much more than just a pet.”

Charlie Malone NSAC Assistance Fund Established
This past April, at the AAF 7th District Spring Convention, in
Tuscaloosa, Alabama, the District 7 Executive Committee established the
"Charlie Malone NSAC Assistance Fund." The fund is named for former 7th
District Governor, Charlie Malone in honor of his service to the
District and his dedication to college students seeking a career in the
advertising industry. Voluntary collections are collected during the
year and are given to the National Student Advertising Competition
(NSAC) team that wins the District competition that is held each year at
the Spring Convention. The funds are used to aid with travel expenses to
NSAC held annually at the National AAF Conference. This year the
District 7 NSAC competition will take place on April 26, at the Spring
Convention in Chattanooga, Tennessee. The winning NSAC team will then
advance toy the NSAC national competition this coming June in Atlanta,
Georgia.
To make a donation to the fund, please contact Amanda Fontaine at
1-662-822-0100 or afontaine@mfmba.org. You may also donate directly to
Charlie Malone the next time you see him. He will be more than happy to
accept your money and to talk your ear off about the NSAC and how YOU
can become more involved.

Local NAF Member to serve on National ADDY Committee
On October 19 & 20, the AAF 7th District Fall Board Meeting took place in Augusta, Georgia. Attending from Nashville were AJ Busé, Chris Chamberlain and Tim Templeton. The Meeting has a dual purpose.
One is to bring together executive board members from local AAF AdFeds from across the District to come together, share ideas and to report on the state of their club to the governor and executive board members of District 7. The other reason this meeting is held every fall is to bring all of the District's local ADDY chair people together to learn all about ADDYs. Because the ADDYs are generally the most difficult event that any local AdFed will undertake during the year, and given the complexity and importance of the event, (Website, Entries, Judging and the Show), AAF actually trains it's local & district ADDY chair people. Heading the all-day seminar on ADDYs was NAF member, Tim Templeton. ADDYs being the part of NAF/AAF that interests Tim the most, he has been involved with them at some level since 1988. Because of his fondness, Tim was appointed this past June at the AAF National Convention to serve on the AAF National ADDY Committee (NAC). One of eighteen members (one member from each District), appointment to the NAC is a two year commitment and is the second time that Tim has served on it. The first being 2000-2002.
Besides his duties at a District level of training local ADDY chair people every fall and offering the local clubs support in their efforts to hold an ADDY event, NAC committee members are responsible for building a creative awards show that has both integrity and creditability; Improving and updating categories, entry and judging procedures; standardizing the competition and its categories on a National, District and Local level.
The NAC recently came together as a group in Albuquerque, New Mexico to talk about the changes in the 2008 ADDY competition and to brief it's members about ADDY website and software changes so they can be presented to the Districts at meeting like the one that just took place in Augusta. The NAC will come together again in the spring before the National ADDY judging is held.
